Joel Cano est né à
Santa Clara, Cuba, en 1966. Il fait des études de dramaturgie
à l’Institut d’Art de la Havane. En 1989, sa
pièce, Timeball, marque la rupture définitive du théâtre
cubain avec le réalisme socialiste et initie un nouveau courant
contestataire chez les dramaturges de l’île. Fondateur
de trois troupes de théâtre (Théâtre de
la Ville, Les trois tristes théâtristes, Théâtre
de la Lune), auteur de chansons et de plusieurs pièces pour
enfants, metteur en scène et scénariste. En 1994,
il s’installe en France et se consacre à l’écriture
de romans et de nouvelles. Il vient de tourner, à Cuba, son
premier long-métrage, Sept jours et sept nuits.

Short Description: A multi-layered
documentary which addresses anthropologic, folkloric, sociologic
and contemporary issues facing Afro-Colombian communities
of the Pacific Lowlands of Colombia, South America. The province
documented is Cauca. The history of the region is told through
the voices of its people. This work attempts to contribute
to the cultural understanding and awareness of Afro-colombian
cultures and their legacy.
It is the artist's goal to
explore the social and psychological role of art and folklore
as a tool for community enhancement and the preservation of
tradition and thereby, identity.
